Thinking Outside the Box
A guide to my favorite jewelry storage solutions
One of the most common questions I’m asked is about jewelry storage. My mother used an acrylic tackle box lined with satin to store her collection. A makeshift, but sensible solution that I still use to store her jewelry to this day. My grandmother opted for a more haphazard approach, storing her strands of pearls and clip-on earrings in assorted paper boxes and tins, themselves an interesting collection of long lost department store branding.
The key to jewelry storage is finding the right box for you. Do I dream of a vanity littered with precious metal boxes encrusted with gemstones? Of course! But do I have a toddler and a limited budget for such storage solutions? Yes! I’ve used stackable WOLF trays for the better part of a decade. A build-your-own solution that allowed me to purchase different trays to fit my jewelry needs, with the added benefit of being not terrible to look at if left out on a dresser. They don’t make my exact version anymore, but here it is on eBay in all its turquoise and orange glory.
Pottery Barn’s version, for all your pearl and pocket watch needs!
Though my turquoise and orange phase has ended, the WOLF trays are still doing their job, housing my rings and chains neatly and securely. BUT if I had some money to burn and needed another solution, a few of my current favorites are below.
Hey Erik Nordstrom, make these in metal! A perfect nostalgic and functional(!) gift.
The exact boxes my grandmother faithfully used for decades. eBay ftw!
This Trove version is always popping up on my feed. They have some awesome collabs with jewelry designers and make really beautiful and timeless storage solutions.

This Silvia Furmanovich box is exquisite and feels like its own precious jewel.
